Privacy Policy

WellRead helps neighbours in a residential community share and borrow books. This policy explains what personal information we collect, why, and your rights under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).

Who we are

WellRead is operated by the WellRead team (the “responsible party”). For any privacy question or request, contact us at hello@getwellread.co.za.

What we collect

• Account details — your name, email address and mobile number.
• Community & library data — the communities you join, the books on your shelf and wishlist, and your borrowing activity.
• Usage analytics — basic, first-party records of pages visited and actions taken, to understand how the app is used. IP addresses are masked and we do not use analytics cookies.

Why we use it

• To run the service — show the catalogue, handle borrow requests, and send notifications.
• To contact you about activity that involves you (in-app, push, and email — which you can control in Notification settings).
• To keep the service secure and improve it.

Who we share it with

Your mobile number is private and only shared with another member when you accept a borrow request between the two of you, so you can arrange the handover on WhatsApp. It is never shown on your profile otherwise.

We use a few trusted service providers who process data on our behalf: our hosting provider, our email provider (for the messages above), and an error-monitoring service. We do not sell your personal information.

Cookies

We set one strictly necessary cookie to keep you signed in. We do not use advertising or analytics cookies, so no cookie banner is needed.

How long we keep it

We keep your information while your account is active. When you delete your account, your personal data is removed.

Your rights

Under POPIA you may access or correct your information, object to its processing, or have it deleted. You can update your details in your profile, delete your account from Account settings, or contact us at hello@getwellread.co.za.

Security

Data is transmitted over HTTPS, and sensitive fields such as your mobile number are encrypted at rest.

Changes

We may update this policy from time to time; the “last updated” date above will change when we do.
